What payment reference should I use to pay personal tax?
Irrespective of the mode of payment, you must always use 11-character payment reference while paying your personal self assessment tax. This is your 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) followed by the letter ‘K’.
How can I pay my personal Self assessment tax?
You can pay your personal self assessment tax to HMRC in any one of the following ways;
- Bank transfer or Tele-banking
- Card payment on Gov.uk website
- Cheque payment
1. Bank transfer or Tele-banking
Pay your personal self assessment tax return using the following HMRC bank details. If you are not sure about your tax office, you should pay to HMRC Cumbernauld, as per HMRC’s guidelines.

If you need to make your personal self assessment tax payment by an overseas account, you can use the following bank account details of HMRC. If you are not sure about your tax office, you should pay to HMRC Cumbernauld, as per HMRC’s guidelines.

2. Card payment on Gov.uk website
You can use HMRC bill payment website to pay your personal Self Assessment tax by debit card using the payment reference number explained above. The link for such service is https://www.gov.uk/pay-tax-debit-credit-card
3. Cheque payment
You can pay your personal Self Assessment tax by cheque, which can be posted to the following address;

BX5 5BD
You need to write the 11-digit payment reference number, explained above, on the back of the cheque.
You can also include the payslip HMRC sent you (if you still get paper statements). Do not fold the payslip or cheque or fasten them together.
Whichever way you choose to pay your tax, be advised that cleared funds must reach HMRC by the deadline.
