Irrespective of the mode of payment, you must always use 11-character payment reference while paying your personal self assessment tax. This is your 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) followed by the letter ‘K’.

You can use HMRC bill payment website to pay your personal Self Assessment tax by debit card using the payment reference number explained above. The link for such service is https://www.gov.uk/pay-tax-debit-credit-card
You can pay your personal Self Assessment tax by cheque, which can be posted to the following address;

You need to write the 11-digit payment reference number, explained above, on the back of the cheque.
You can also include the payslip HMRC sent you (if you still get paper statements). Do not fold the payslip or cheque or fasten them together.
