Cryptoasset ETNs Now Eligible for ISAs: What UK Investors Need to Know

Table of Contents

From 8 October 2025, UK retail investors can include cryptoasset exchange traded notes (cETNs) in their investment portfolios. These digital finance products, previously limited to professional investors, are now eligible for inclusion in Stocks and Shares ISAs and will qualify for Innovative Finance ISAs (IFISAs) from April 2026, subject to HMRC approval.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has confirmed that the long-standing UK ban on cryptoasset exchange traded notes (cETNs) for retail investors has been lifted from 8 October 2025. This major policy shift allows individual investors to gain exposure to crypto-linked assets through FCA-recognised investment exchanges, signalling the government’s growing openness to digital finance.

Previously, cETNs—which are structured debt securities linked to the performance of cryptocurrencies—were available only to professional investors due to concerns about volatility and investor protection. The FCA’s decision means that retail investors can now hold these products within Stocks and Shares ISAs, offering a new tax-efficient route to crypto exposure.

HMRC Clarifies Tax Treatment

According to HMRC, ISA managers seeking to include cETNs in Innovative Finance ISAs (IFISAs) will need explicit approval. From 6 April 2026, cryptoasset ETNs will formally be classified as qualifying investments under the IFISA rules, aligning their tax treatment with other financial instruments such as peer-to-peer loans and certain bonds.

However, while cETNs can now form part of an ISA portfolio, they do not carry protection under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). Investors must therefore remain aware of the potential risks and volatility associated with digital assets.

Consumer Safeguards and Regulatory Oversight

To protect UK investors, the FCA has confirmed that cETNs will be subject to its Conduct of Business Sourcebook (COBS) and relevant financial promotion rules. This means stricter risk warnings, marketing restrictions, and compliance with the Consumer Duty framework—ensuring firms act in the best interest of clients and communicate investment risks clearly.

The Treasury stated that the move reflects its ongoing commitment to modernising the UK financial system, allowing savers to benefit from a diverse range of investment opportunities within tax-advantaged wrappers like ISAs, while maintaining robust consumer protections.

The government also confirmed it will continue reviewing the position of cETNs, with the possibility of extending their eligibility to Stocks and Shares ISAs more broadly as the crypto market matures and public understanding improves.

In summary, the inclusion of cryptoasset ETNs in ISAs marks a major milestone in the UK’s approach to integrating digital assets into mainstream finance. While this change offers exciting new opportunities for investors seeking diversification, it also calls for careful consideration of the risks, given the absence of FSCS protection and the evolving nature of crypto regulation.

Cryptoasset Exchange Traded Notes (cETNs) are investment products that track the performance of cryptocurrencies. From October 2025, UK retail investors can include cETNs within Stocks and Shares ISAs, and from April 2026, they will qualify under the Innovative Finance ISA (IFISA) category, subject to HMRC approval.

The FCA confirmed that cETNs became accessible to retail investors from 8 October 2025. They will be officially reclassified as qualifying investments for IFISAs starting 6 April 2026.

Yes, cETNs are automatically eligible for inclusion in Stocks and Shares ISAs, provided they are traded on FCA-recognised exchanges and comply with HMRC’s ISA investment rules.

Yes, but only from 6 April 2026. HMRC has confirmed that ISA managers will need formal approval before offering cETNs within IFISAs.

No. Investments in Cryptoasset ETNs are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). This means investors could lose money if the issuer or exchange fails, so careful due diligence is essential.

The FCA requires all firms offering cETNs to follow the Conduct of Business Sourcebook (COBS), Consumer Duty, and financial promotion rules, including risk warnings and marketing restrictions to protect investors.

Holding cETNs within an ISA wrapper allows any gains or income from these investments to be free from UK Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax, making them an attractive option for tax-efficient crypto exposure.

Including Cryptoasset ETNs in an ISA portfolio can offer diversification and potential high returns linked to the crypto market. However, given the volatility and lack of FSCS protection, investors should seek professional tax and investment advice before proceeding.
